Who is eligible for the SASSA Disability Grant

  • You must meet the requirements of the mean test.

  • You must not receive another social grant for yourself.

How to apply for the SASSA disability grant

Sassa Disability grants that you be assessed and diagnosed by a medical practitioner recognized by Sassa. The medical practitioner will assess you and make a recommendation to Sassa as to whether your impairment to severe enough to qualify for a disability grant. Sassa makes the final decision to award or not, not a medical practitioner. After the medical assignment has been done, the application process can begin.

A disability grant will awarded if you meet the legislated requirements and if the medical assessment confirms that you are unable to work because of your condition or disability. Whether the grant is provided as a temporary grant or permanent grant is determined by the medical assessment. The assessment also indicates whether a medical review will be required in the future.

  • You can apply through the nearest office where you live.
  • If you are old or sick and unable to go to their office. A friend or a family member can also apply for you.
  • In the presence of the sassa officer, your application will completed.
  • After the completion of your application form, you will be given a receipt.
  • The receipt is the proof of your application form.
  • When your application is not approved, then give a reason in writing.
  • You have the right to request Sassa to reconsider its decision if you are not satisfied with the decision made. Then you have the right to appeal to the administration of social development. The request for the Sassa to reconsider its decision must be informed by the outcome of your application and must be logged with the Sassa within 90 days of you being informed of the outcome of your application.

Date of award of the grant

When your application is approved, your monthly payment will start from which date you applied.

If your application for the grant is unsuccessful

You will be Informed by the Sassa team and given a reason in writing for the refusal of the grant application. You have a right to request the decision to be reconsidered, within 90 days of notification.

  • Through cash payment
  • Through banks including post bank
  • Through institution

Suspension of the SASSA Disability grant

  • Admission to a state-funded institution 
  • When the grant is not taken for 3 consecutive months
  • When the time of temporary disability has ended.

SASSA Disability Grant’s review

At the time of application, you must declare any income and assets. When you fail to give the required documentation during review your grant will be suspended. 

The review verifies that a beneficiary complies with the conditions for the continuation of the grant. A review is conducted to check that your circumstances have not changed since you applied for the grant. And some time that you are still alive (completion of live certificate).

Sassa notify you at least three months before the date of the review in writing indicating where and when the review take place and what may happen as he result of it. Home visits are conducted for bedridden beneficiaries. When all the process is completed you must be given a receipt compliance. When his or her refugee status ends then the sassa will review the grant of refugee. 

Responsibility of beneficiaries 

This is your responsibility to keep the sassa informed of changes in their circumstance and means. This may include information on changes in either physical or postal addresses. The privacy communication of Sassa with you is through registered mail. Failure to respond to the notice sent by Sassa may result in the suspension of your grant.
