SASSA War Veterans Grant: Introduction
Sassa War Veterans Grant is specifically for the soldiers who participated in the Second World War from 1939 to 1945 and the Korean War from 1950 to 1053. The former soldiers who fought in the war and who aren’t getting any other social grant are unable to support themselves financially. The government is taking responsibility for the soldiers who need financial support.
Sassa War Veterans Grant eligibility criteria
To apply for the Sassa War Veterans Grant you must fulfill the eligibility criteria of the grant. Following are the criteria you need to fulfill
- You must be a citizen of South Africa or a permanent resident of South Africa.
- You must be living in South Africa
- You must be 60 years of age or above or a disabled person.
- You must have fought either in the Second World War or the Korean War.
- The former soldier and spouse must meet the requirements of the means test
- You must not be cared for in any state institution or get any other financial support/grant.
The means test of Sassa War veterans grant
The means test is a method of evaluation for checking the financial status of the soldier who is applying for the grant. It’s a tool to confirm whether the soldier is deserving or not for the Sassa War Veterans Grant.
Assets and income for a single person
- The applicant must not own assets valued more than R1372800
- The applicant’s earnings must not exceed R96,840 annually.
Assets and income for married person
- The value of assets of both applicant and spouse must not exceed R2745600
- The soldier and spouse must not earn R193680 annually.
Application process of the war veteran grant
The former soldiers can apply for the sassa war veterans grant by visiting the nearest SASSA office. they need to fill out a form in the office. Otherwise, they can apply for the grant online through the sassa official website.
For persons who are too old, suffering from any disease, or are disabled sassa provides a facility for applying via a representative. The soldier needs to get a medical certificate from the doctor showing the reason for unavailability to the office to complete the application process.
An officer entitled by sassa authority may assist in filling out the application form. After filling out the form and taking the interview the officer will provide a receipt. Whether you are eligible or not you have to keep the receipt as proof of application.

Processing time of Sassa War Veterans grant
Normally it takes 30 to 90 days to process the Sassa war veterans grant application. In this period sassa authorities check and verify the provided data. If your grant is approved the payments will be started ab initio from the date you applied within three months. If the application is rejected the sassa authorities will send you a detailed letter showing the reasons for disapproval.

Sassa war veterans grant appeal
In the case your application is rejected for a war veterans grant you can ask for a review. After reviewing your application, it also gets rejected and if you are not satisfied with the decision, you can appeal against the rejection of your application. You can file an appeal against the decision to the Ministry of Social Development. You can initiate the appeal within 90 days of the rejection of the application for the Sassa War Veteran Grant.
After submitting the appeal, the Ministry of Social Development will review your appeal for further action. If the appeal is considered right the relief will be granted and you will start receiving the payments. If the appeal is rejected, you will be informed in writing with the complete details of the decision.
Sassa war veterans grant payment process
After the approval of the grant by SASSA, the payments will start from the date you applied. The payment schedule is announced by the sassa every month. The payment date may vary every month.
- Sassa pays the applicant through the following 3 methods. (you have to choose one from the given methods)
- The payments will be deposited to your bank or Postbank account. The service charges may apply as per the bank’s policy.
- The payments can be withdrawn from any specific sassa partnered retail outlets. i.e. Pick n Pay, Shoprite, Boxer, Checkers, Usave, and Spar.
- From the institutions acting as administrators of the Sassa War Veterans Grant i.e. Non-profit organizations, Disability centers, old age homes, etc
Changing banking details for the grant
If you want to change your banking details, you can go to the sassa office. There is also an option available to change the payment method for the monthly payments. If you are unable to go yourself to receive the payments, you can nominate a person from family or friends to collect your grant payment.

Reason for suspension of Sassa War Veteran grant
Due to the following reasons your grant may be suspended
- If you have provided any false information or misconducted.
- Your circumstances have changed
- You didn’t respond at the time of grant reviewed
- Your grant was mistakenly approved
- As a result of the grant revision
- If you pass away
- Unable to provide proof that you are still alive when reviewed
- If your income and assets are increased
- You didn’t collect your payments consistently
